THE Zimbabqean government has approved a framework agreement of a mega solar power project with a United Arab Emirates (UAE) company Skypower Global (CAYMAN) to produce 500 megawatts as authorities seek to ease power challenges.

Addressing a post-Cabinet briefing in Harare yesterday, Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa said the project would see the construction of solar-based power generation plants in phases.

“The framework agreement will pave the way for engagement between Skypower Global and Zesa Holdings in order for the two entities to negotiate a power purchase agreement as well as other ancillary agreements relevant to power generation.

“Cabinet advises that alternative sources of energy, including and in this instance, solar power, will complement the existing hydro and thermal power production systems, thereby increasing access to electricity in Zimbabwe and enabling growth of the economy,” Mutsvangwa said.

The minister added that the initiative came against the backdrop of already existing good relations between Zimbabwe and the UAE which was enhanced through the Dubai Expo engagements. – Daily News
