DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) — A six-month pregnant woman and her 14-year-old daughter were killed by a lightning strike on Friday evening in Tanzania’s southern highlands region of Rukwa, an official said on Saturday.
Tano Mwela, the Kalambo district commissioner in the Rukwa region, said the lightning strike that hit Kacheche village at 4.30 p.m. local time on Friday left another five people injured. “The five injured people were admitted to hospital and they are in critical condition,” said Mwela, adding that the dead pregnant woman was 30 years old and her daughter was in Standard Four.
Innocent Rungwa, the Kisumba ward councilor, said the victims were hit by the lightning strike inside their house, adding that the house caught fire that was ignited by the lightning.On Jan. 9, four people who were digging a grave for burying their relative died after they were hit by a lightning strike in Tanzania’s southern highlands region of Mbeya. Mayeka Mayeka, Chunya district commissioner in Mbeya region, said one man who was also digging the grave was seriously injured when the lighting hit them in the afternoon.
